Does acupuncture hurt?

Sometimes but most people say its no worse than getting tapped lightly by a toothpick.  Most often acupuncture is painless.  We even work on babies as young as a few months old and they don't even notice.  Patients find it to be a relaxing and enjoyable experience.  Find out more about what to expect at your first treatment.

What does acupunture treat?

Acupuncture treats a wide range of conditions because it focuses on restoring function to organ systems, muscles and tissue while working directly with the nervous system.  Check out this list of common conditions we treat.

How big are the needles?

Acupuncture needles are extremely thin and usually very short. They're so small that between 5 and 10 can fit inside one of the needles used when you get a shot!

But I'm terrified of needles!

It's normal to be nervous about sharp objects! If you've never had acupuncture we will make sure to talk with you throughout the process and ensure your comfort during the treatment.  We will do everything we can to ease any fear you may have.  And most people say its no worse than getting lightly tapped by a toothpick!

How long does a treatment take?

Your first visit last about an hour.  Follow up visits generally take between 30 and 45 minutes depending on your condition.

Do I have to undress?

You are never naked or exposed during your treatment. We may ask you to put on a loose gown or bring bring shorts if needed for your treatment but your privacy is always preserved. Most commonly used acupuncture points are on the lower arms, legs, belly, back and head which are easily accessed.

What should I wear?

Your practitioner will inform you of the general approach to treatment and whether articles of clothing need to be adjusted so the area can be properly treated.  It's generally appropriate to wear yoga or workout clothes to a treatment.  If tight fitting clothes are worn to the treatment, a gown, shorts and/or sheet will be provided. Privacy and safety are maintained at ALL times.

Check out our side by side comparison on our page Acupuncture vs. Dry Needling.

How many treatments will I need?

Our goal is to help you get better as quickly as possible.  Some patients get better after one treatment and we send them on their way.  The number of treatments depends on the severity of the illness or injury and length of time it has been occuring.

Where do the needles go?

The location of the points can vary, some being directly in the area of concern and others being in a seemingly unrelated area.  This is normal.

Can children get acupuncture?

Children of all ages are treated and respond well to acupuncture and Chinese herbal treatment.  Needles are generally inserted, gently stimulated and immediately removed.  Check out this video of acupuncture on infants
